Accident…or Accidentally on Purpose?

I’m sure we all remember the moment we first saw Iceland’s iconic tweet with the hashtag #deeppanalbumparty back in 2017. 👀

It’s easy to make a mistake on social media, like misspelling a word or tagging the wrong account – or inadvertently referencing something that you don’t quite mean to (the Iceland tweet was about hosting a pizza party to celebrate the release of Ed Sheeran’s new album, FYI). 🍕

But are these seemingly accidental tweets really a very deliberate marketing technique? 🤔

Let’s look at the stats. 📊

This single tweet from NASA racked up 10K retweets and 67.9K likes in under 24 hours. 😮

Other big names, such as McDonalds and Universal Pictures, also took part in what quickly became a trend – tweeting ‘clown’ and ‘cinema’, respectively.⚡️

Looking at the amount of engagement that NASA’s tweet generated it’s easy to see why an ‘accidentally on purpose’ tweet might be a good idea – but maybe not every day! 🌍

Is this cheeky technique something you’d give a go? Let us know! ✨
